Hong Kong-born Alex has been running SGS enrichment learning center for more than 10 years in Fresh Meadows. Along with his partners, Alex opened up Star Cafe to primarily provide food to the students at near-by Francis Lewis High School, the SGS learning center, and Alex's wife's day care center in Flushing.
The Star Cafe and SGS learning center are a 10-minute walk from each other.
Alex has no background in cooking or the restaurant business. "It's a challenge, but we have no choice," he says. "Because my wife suggested it."

As a Chinese-American, every year we have our animal symbol. The symbol this year is an ox. Every animal has their own characteristic or personality.
The ox is the "working hard" animal. With the pandemic, business has been really bad. We're hoping that as we're working hard, we can earn more business.
I bought this in a Hong Kong store five or six years ago, even though it was not the Year of the Ox. You can get this in any Chinese supermarket or gift store. Especially this year, we can use the ox as the symbol.
I like the ox's personality. Working hard!
I usually have it in my house. I brought it to the restaurant two months ago when we opened. To show our spirit.
